UNIVERSE : THE SAVAGE GARDEN DISCOGRAHPY by J. Kevin Wells (crowtrbt@ns.sympatico.ca) Version: 4.04 Last Modified: 10/13/2005 The latest version of this document can always be found at: http://universe.savage-garden.net (c)1997-2005 --------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION ------------ This discography is an attempt to document the work of Australian musicians Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones, collectively known an Savage Garden. The information contained in this document is entirely related to the musical releases. There is no information about the band members themselves, with the exception of information contained in liner notes. For the moment, this discography will remain in the form of a text file, as that is the form that I find the most useful. It is easy to save as one file, easy to print and easy to reference. I may convert the discography to an HTML format if the demand exists. Although this discography is copyrighted, you may post it or distribute it in any way you like, provided it is complete and not altered in any way, and provided no charge has been made for it. This discography will only contain official releases. Bootleg items will not be listed. Also, I will list Whitfield internal test pressings only when there is no official release with that track listing. It should probably be assumed that Whitfield test pressings exist for all UK releases. Please note that Whitfield CDR's can be very easily counterfeited. Purchase them at your own risk. The discography is divided into five sections - albums, singles, videos, compilations and miscellaneous. The miscellaneous section will generally contain non-music, interview releases. Each entry starts with the year of release and the title. Following that is detailed information about items released by that title in this format: CD 1997 US Columbia CK 67954 <04/03/97> | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Country Publisher catalog Date of | | or origin number release | | when | Year of release known | Media Format In the case of CD singles, a description of the type of CD case may follow the detail line. Track timings and song titles appear below the detail lines. Releases with identical track listings are grouped together. Track timings, whenever possible, are taken by reading the CD in a CD-ROM drive, and not from the CD's cover or the writing on the CD. When necessary, notes by me will follow the track listings. All song titles will appear with standard capitalization, and word separation, except where they are contained within liner notes. Many of Savage Garden's early releases listed the song titles in lowercase. I've chosen to assume that it was a stylistic choice, and that the songs titles where not supposed to actually be lowercase. Similarly, the songs titles listed on the Universe CD Single were all written as one word. I've chosen to believe that "Love Can Move You" is not actually "LOVECANMOVEYOU". Items are listed in the order of the first appearance of a release with that title - usually that means their Australian release. The detailed information is also. whenever possible, listed in order of publication. That order usually means Australia, The United States (and Canada), The U.K., Europe, and Japan. Promo CD's are always listed last, regardless of its country of origin. Formats: CD - Compact disc (album or single) C2 - Part of a 2 CD set. The "I Want You" tracks were remixed by Xenomamia, incorrectly spelled as Zenomania on this release. The "Space Time Continuum" version is the same as the "Journey Through Space And Time" version of "To The Moon And Back". A promo version of this disc was, however, released as single disc with a cue sheet insert, and was titled "Savage Garden Dance Remixes". Later pressings of this CD have a different version of "Tears Of Pearls (Tears On The Dancefloor Mix)". The only way to tell the difference between the two pressings is by the sticker on the from cover. The original pressing has a transparent sticker with "includes BONUS remix album". Later pressings have a sticker with "includes DANCE remix album". If the sticker is no longer present, the only way to tell is by listening to this track. The second version has much more reverb in the vocals. One particular point where you can tell is the first occurrence of the word "cry". The original version is double tracked on that word, but the second, corrected version has a lot of reverb added, too. (Thanks go to Toby Harnisch for pointing this out.) Xenomania are a pair of remix artists names Brian Higgens and Matt Gray. The "Xenomania Funxy Mix" seems to be a misprint, as the track originally appeared on the UK "I Want You" single as "Xenomania Funky Mix". The "X" in "Funxy" is clearly an "X" as in "MIX", and not a "K" like in "CATWALK". When the track later appeared on the Japanese release "Truly Madly Deeply", it was further transformed into "Xeno Mania Punxy Mix". The heavy pixelation on the song titles on the back of "The Future Of Earthly Delites" could cause the "F" in "Funxy" to be mistaken for a "P", but it looks nothing like the "P" in "SPACE". "I Want You (Getmeouttathisclub Mix)" appears to be the same as the "Sharp Miami Mix" that first appeared on the UK "I Want You" single. A 2 CD set featuring this CD was also issued in Europe in 2001. This release instead included the international version if the self-titled debut release. Thanks go to Marco Zeni for information on the European release.] --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1998 Bonus Disc (Asian Tour Package) C2 1998 ASI Columbia 487161 9 [2] (bonus disc with Asian s/t reissue) 5:48 I Want You (Xenomania Punxy Mix) 3:58 To The Moon And Back (Hani's Num Radio Edit) 4:37 Truly, Madly, Deeply (Australia Mix) 4:19 Break Me Shake Me (Remix) 4:30 Mine 4:47 Love Can Move You 4:11 All Around Me 5:02 I'll Bet He Was Cool [Editor's Note: "Break Me Shake Me (Remix)" is the same as "Break Me Shake Me (Broken Mix)", which appears on the "Futures of Earthly Delites" bonus CD. It does not contain the track "Mine" as that track was included on the Japanese version of the self-titled CD as a bonus track. It is quite common for Japanese CD's to contain bonus tracks not found on the US release. Like other Japanese CD's, this CD is usually quite expensive. However the cost of the CD is probably less than the cost of purchasing all the CD singles that contain these tracks, even if you could find someone willing to sell them. Most of the singles are now out of print. "Fire Inside The Man", for example, was previously only available on the initial Australian release of "I Want You", a CD that is nearly impossible to find. "I'll Bet He Was Cool" is the slightly shorter version that originally appeared on the Australian "Break Me Shake Me" CD. See "The Future Of Earthly Delites" for discussion of the track "I Want You (Xeno Mania Punxy Mix)". "This Side Of Me" is the slightly longer version that appears on the UK "Truly Madly Deeply" CD single, part 1. The track "I Want You (Acoustic Live Version)" is different than the version that appears on the promo release of "All Around Me". This track also appears on the Swedish "Break Me Shake Me" CD single, part 2. One of the back up singers on the two acoustic live tracks is Jennifer Waite, lead singer of the band Aneiki (you can find more info about this band in Daniel Jones' "Producer" section of this discography). "Break Me Shake Me" was recorded in an Adelaide studio during the first Australian tour. "I Want You" was recorded at Sony studios in LA. "Truly Madly Deeply (Dub Mix)" originally appeared on the UK "Truly Madly Deeply" CD single, part 2, as "(Night Radio Mix)". Also see the Australian releases and the UK releases of TMD for discussion of the inconsistent naming of the various mixes. Thanks to Bjorn Scharloo for this information. The Taiwanese version of this CD originally came with an exclusive custom notebook & pen, held in unique picture slipcase. Early pressings of the Malaysian CD's came with a blue Savage Garden mug with the "Savage Garden-Affirmation-sembawang-sembawang" (sembawang, according to some online translation sites, means "Malaysian" or "Indonesian") on it. Thanks to Richard Kirk for this information. The Singapore version was originally marketed as part of Sony/Columbia's "Millennium Superstars" series. The CD included a year 2000 diary featuring Sony/Columbia artists, and postcards. The Chinese version of the album I have listed may not be an official release. Although the pictures I have seen of this pressing look real, China is well know for their unofficial/pirate releases. Always use caution when purchasing Chinese releases. This CD also contains two new tracks by Darren Hayes, one of which, "California", is unique to this release.] --------------------------------------------------------------------- SINGLES ------- 1996 I Want You CD 1996 AUS Roadshow Music 17494-2 <06/30/96> [slide pack] CS 1996 AUS Roadshow Music 100267-4 <06/30/96> 3:53 I Want You 4:11 Fire Inside The Man CD 1996 AUS Roadshow Music 17494-2 [slide pack] 3:54 I Want You (Original Radio Version) 6:22 I Want You (Flu - Club Mix) 6:30 I Want You (Pee Wee - Club Mix) 3:44 I Want You (Flu - Radio Edit) 6:24 I Want You (Flu - Midnight Mix) [Editor's Note: "I Want You (Original Radio Version)" is the same as the album version.] CD 1997 US Columbia 38K 78503 <03/25/97> [cardboard case] CD 1997 CAN Columbia 38K 78503 <04/01/97> CS 1997 US Columbia 38T 78503 <03/25/97> 3:53 I Want You 3:46 Tears Of Pearls CD 1997 US Columbia 44K 78505[promo?]<03/25/97> [Full sized case] CD 1997 CAN Columbia 44K 78505[promo?]<03/25/97> [Full sized case] CD 1997 MEX Columbia 44K 78505[?] [promo] CD 1997 JAP Sony SRCS 8308 <04/23/97> 3:54 I Want You (Album Version) 3:39 I Want You (Jason Nevins' Radio Remix) 8:33 I Want You (Bastone Club Mix) 7:58 I Want You (I Need I Want Mix) 3:32 I Want You (Hot Radio Mix) US release Liner Notes: "Savage Garden are Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones. Together they write the songs; Darren is the lead singer. Daniel plays keyboards and guitar. They're both in their early 20s. They made an impressive entrance onto their home Australian music scene with their debut single 'i want you' which became the #1 selling platinum single from an Australian act in '96. Their 2nd single 'to the moon & back' released in early '97 has quickly outsold the 1st. "'i want you' has begun leaking via imports onto U.S. pop radio with influential Top Forty stations spinning the record and receiving immediate requests on the song. "Savage Garden's highly anticipated debut self-titled album will be released in the Spring of 1997 (CK 67954). "_Billboard Mgz._ says of 'i want you' ...'The track rides a jittery synth beat reminiscent of the '80s tenure of Duran Duran, swelling into a catchy, candy-sweet chorus. Partners Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones blend harmonies well enough to make the grade at top 40, and they're photogenic enough to make teenage girls swoon.'" This release features a marble-like pattern in the vinyl. It was issued in a plain white sleeve with holes to expose the record's labels. Strangely, the record does not have Savage Garden's name on it. Richard Kirk, who sent me detailed information on this release, has observed that without Savage Garden's name, the record is of very limited use as a promotional item, especially for a group's first song. He further observes, that the absence of the group's name could be explained if the item was a test pressing for use by Roadshow only, but there appears to be a few copies in existence - far more than would be pressed for internal use. Additionally, vinyl test pressings are commonly done on acetate, not colored vinyl. This seems far too elaborate for an internal promo. This promo does not initially appear to have a catalog number, but etched in the run-out groove of side A is "ML 10338-A", and on side B, "ML 10338-B". Also etched in the run-out groove on each side is "MA", which may be the initials of the person who mastered the record. The 12" vinyl version of this single may have been a acetate test pressing. Pressed in very limited quantities, this promo single appears to have been an attempt to market Almighty Associates and Dataluxe (two aliases for the same remixing group) to the US. The "Dataluxe Mix" was originally produced as an Almighty remix for release in the UK, where Almighty had been steadily gaining success with their remixing style, including remixes of "To The Moon And Back." Because of it's "big room" sound, this mix was deemed "too American" for the UK market, so the mix was not chosen for commercial use. Almighty Associates therefore chose to direct the release at the US market instead, and reformed as Dataluxe for this purpose. Due to this change, the release appears to have been rushed, leading to several inaccuracies as noted above. This release is very rare. However, the "Dataluxe mix" is the same as the "Almighty Bangin' Mix" later released in the UK on a limited edition (but still more available) maxi-single in 2004. The "Almighty Mix" can be found on the same single, and is also the same as the "Almighty Affirmative Mix." "I Knew I Loved You" is a live performance. It has backing vocals by Elisa Fiorillo & Angie Bekker, and is orchestrated by Mathes. "O Solo Mio" is a duet to Luciano Pavarotti, the famous opera singer, and does not feature Daniel. "All You Need Is Love" was preformed at the end of the concert by all artists. Darren sang the lines "Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be/It's easy", and probably joined in on the chorus. The concert was recorded live from the Parco Novi Sad, Modena, on June 6, 2000. It was a charity concert, funding projects for Tibetan and Cambodian children, and was attended by the Dalai Lama.
